Consumer Group: PLN’s Tariff Adjustment Is Unconstitutional

The state utility company Perusahaan Listrik Negara should reconsider its decision to impose an automatic electricity tariff adjustment because such a move violates the constitution, the Indonesian Consumer Protection Foundation (YLKI) said on Tuesday.

“The automatic tariff adjustment is very liberal as it is mainly based on market mechanims … [and therefore] it violates the Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia,” YLKI chairman Tulus Abadi said.

Tariffs for customers using non-subsidized electricity are now subject to a floating rate that is based on the rupiah exchange rate against the dollar, fuel prices and monthly inflation.
