Indonesia in risky game of catch-up

Indonesia, one of the fastest growing economies in Asean, could face a crisis in the making as the current structure of electricity generation in the country is inadequate to meet future demands and infrastructure is outdated.

“The Indonesian electricity sector is in trouble” is a common theme of research papers that circulate in the country. The challenges could mount as the economy powers ahead and the middle class expands, coupled with the government’s plans to add value by restricting exports of just raw materials and encouraging domestic growth of heavy industries.
